The Grainger Foundation donated $10,000 to support the Silver Cross Replacement Hospital Pediatric Unit
The donation was recommended by Tommy Kersting, Director of W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s distribution center in Minooka (scheduled to open in 2012). Grainger has been part of the business community in the greater Chicago-land area for more than 80 years as the leading
broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating products. The Grainger Foundation, an independent, private foundation based in Lake Forest, Illinois, was established in 1949 by William W. Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger, Inc.
“We are proud to support the programs offered by Silver Cross Hospital,” said Kersting. “We understand the need to support the children and families who are afflicted with illness.”

The new pediatric unit in the Replacement Hospital is licensed for 8 beds. Each large private, patient room has been designed to be acuity-adaptable, which means that the space, supplies and staff will be available in the room to deliver the appropriate level of care to the patient rather than transfer the patient between units as needs change. And, procedures such as IV starts, wound care, culture collection, breathing treatments, and pulse oximetry monitoring, can be performed at the bedside.
In addition, each pediatric room will include wireless internet, 30” flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor with decorative colored lighting that can be controlled by the patient. There will also be a comfortable sofa-sleeper so parents can stay around the clock to support their child and be involved in the plan of care. A multi-purpose room will also be available for education and family time, as well as a parent lounge.
The unit will include two pediatric high visibility rooms that will be located directly across from the nurse’s station. The rooms will have a video-monitoring feature for safety, especially when the parents are unable to be at the bedside and multiple sets of secured doors in conjunction with a security system for infant/child protection.
Silver Cross will continue to partner with Children’s Memorial Hospital for 24/7 pediatrician coverage to care for patients in the Pediatric Unit. Children’s Memorial also has an outpatient center on the replacement hospital campus that opened last summer offering numerous pediatric specialist and other services.
