The International Order of King’s Daughters and Sons (www.iokds.org) is the founding organization of Silver Cross Hospital. The order was founded in New York City in 1886 by a small group of women with a desire to help others. It is one of the oldest Christian service organizations in the United States. Word of the organization quickly spread, and circles were established from coast to coast and even overseas.
A circle of young ladies was established in Joliet, Illinois. Another circle of King’s Sons was also organized at that time. Seeing a need for a hospital in the area, the members worked diligently to plan and build this hospital. The land was even donated by one of the members. The badge of the King’s Daughters is a silver Maltese cross, and they named their hospital Silver Cross. The building was dedicated in 1895. Today, that emblem is on the wall of the vestibule to the entrance of the hospital.
Since 1895, the Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons has continued to support the hospital. Since 1975, the local charitable organization has donated more than $454,274 to support the inpatient dialysis services at Silver Cross Hospital. A craft fair is held in the Fall with the proceeds donated to purchase needed items for the care and comfort of dialysis patients.
There are evening and daytime circles and a Junior Circle. The junior circle offers a fine opportunity for young people to learn about volunteering. Members meet monthly to work on projects and to share Bible study, devotions and fellowship. The group’s motto is to “Look Up, and Not Down, Look Forward and Not Back, Look out and Not In, and Lend a Hand.” For more information about the King’s Daughters, call Volunteer Services at Silver Cross Hospital at (815) 300-7117.
