Silver Cross Offers Health Education Classes in October

New Lenox, IL (Sept. 17, 2013)— To help seniors maintain their independence and avoid future risk of falling, Dr. Thomas Lee, family practice physician, will host a free program—A Delicate BalanceTuesday, Oct. 8.  The free event will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  Families are invited to learn about what causes a fall or loss of balance, how to identify areas of weakness, how to safeguard the home and other helpful tips to avoid harmful falls.  Free Fall & Balance screenings will be offered by physical therapists with The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross before and after the program.  Register to attend at www.silvercross.org or by calling 1-888-660-HEAL (4325). 

AHA Healthcare Provider CPR Class

Silver Cross Hospital provides an AHA Healthcare Provider CPR Class for LPNs, RNs, Paramedics, EMTs, and CNAs. This class teaches one and two person, infant, child and adult CPR as well as rescue from choking. The class will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Depression Screening & Program

Everyone experiences stress, sadness and anxiety from time to time – it's part of life. These feelings often happen when you lose a job, children move away from home, during divorce, with a death in the family, or during retirement. But when changes in mood and behavior interfere with one’s ability to work, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities, it could be a sign of depression. On National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, Oct. 10, Silver Cross Hospital Behavioral Health Services will offer a free, anonymous questionnaire assessing risk for mood and anxiety disorders and a confidential meeting with a behavioral health professional.  At 4 p.m. Dr. Shivkumar Pandian, psychiatrist, will discuss the seriousness of depression and treatments available.  Family members welcome.  For more information, or to register to attend the program, call 1-888-660-HEAL (4325) or visit www.silvercross.org

Is it Only Heartburn?

Learn how heartburn and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can lead to Barrett’s esophagus Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.   Dr. Kamran Ayub, Medical Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver Cross, will discuss GERD, a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, or food pipe, causing serious irritation and heartburn.  GERD can lead to a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett’s esophagus.  Learn about the causes and symptoms of GERD and the specialty treatment options offered.  Register to attend this free program at www.silvercross.org or call 1-888-660-HEAL (4325). 

Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Program (MAPD)

Choosing a Medicare plan can be confusing. Learn about your options and how to protect yourself from some of the expenses Medicare doesn’t cover from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois on Monday, Oct. 14.  This free program will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Topics include Medicare basics, eligibility and enrollment periods, types of plans available, and more. A question & answer session will follow. Friends and family are welcome. Obesity & Your Health: Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You? 

Looking to lose weight? Join Drs. Christopher Joyce and Brian Lahmann, experienced gastric bypass surgeons with Bariatric & Minimally Invasive (BMI) Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, for a free informational session about Obesity & Your Health: Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You?
