Hospital recognized by readers for Best in Urgent Care and Best Employer over 50 Employees

Silver Cross Hospital was recently recognized in 2016 Herald News Reader’s Choice Awards as the Best in Urgent Care and Best Employer Over 50 Employees.  More than 33,000 readers of the Herald News cast their online ballots to select their favorite local businesses in 60 categories during the month of September.

“We are extremely honored and proud to have been chosen in these prestigious categories,” said Mary Bakken, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Silver Cross Hospital. “For life’s unexpected illnesses and injuries and all your healthcare needs, you can count on our compassionate staff to provide you and your family with the safest, highest quality, personalized care.”

Since opening the doors to the new Hospital at I-355 and Route 6 in 2012, Silver Cross remains dedicated to treating patients the way they should be treated with new services, enhanced expertise and safe, accessible care.

“For many, this care starts in the Emergency Department – either at the New Lenox Hospital or our Silver Cross Emergency Care Center at 143rd St. and Bell Rd. in Homer Glen,” said Bakken.  “With over 70,000 visits annually, both facilities are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and staffed by the same group of board certified emergency medicine physicians trained to treat patients of all ages.”

Patients are treated in private rooms with ample space for family members.  To help expedite care, lab and imaging services are conveniently located nearby.  The Silver Cross Emergency Department is designated as a Level II Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, and recognized by IDPH to care for pediatric patients.  Silver Cross is also the resource hospital for the area’s Emergency Medical System (EMS) System training paramedics and first responders with over 30 fire departments and ambulance services.

In January, Silver Cross opened an Urgent Care center at 1051 Essington Rd. on Joliet’s west side to provide after-hours medical care for sudden illnesses and injuries that don’t quite warrant a trip to the Emergency Department.  At the Silver Cross Urgent Care, there is no waiting and you can reserve a time to be seen online through SCHedule Now at www.silvercross.org. Using SCHedule Now, patients can also book appointments for mammograms, X-rays, blood draws and other tests at the Hospital and several satellite locations.

“You may also be surprised to learn that Silver Cross is the largest employer in New Lenox and the fourth largest in Will County,” said Tracy Ardis, Director of Human Resources. “Since moving to the new hospital in 2012, we have added over 500 new jobs increasing our workforce by 25%.

But what really sets Silver Cross apart from other businesses is its unique culture. “We treat our staff the same way we treat our patients – with warmth, compassion and understanding,” adds Ardis.  “We invest in our people providing market competitive rewards, offering development opportunities, and maintaining the skills of our staff needed to provide the leading edge and increasingly complex care our patients require.”

Silver Cross employs over 2,500 staff members throughout the system and enjoys a vacancy and turnover rate much lower than national average.  And the average tenure of Silver Cross employees is 8.7 years, 34% higher than the U.S. Hospital tenure.

The hospital is a market leader in retirement and medical benefits and has a robust employee wellness program, which received the 2016 American Heart Association’s Fit Friendly Gold Achievement Award and Will County’s We Will Work Healthy Worksite 2015-2016 Gold Award.

“We maintain a strong sense of family here,” says Bakken. “This is one of the main reasons why we continue to remain an independent community hospital.”

Winners of Herald News Reader’s Choice Awards were honored at a ceremony, Dec. 1 at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet and listed in the paper on Dec. 4.  Click here for a referral to a physician on staff at Silver Cross, or to apply for a job.
