Silver Cross Hospital Employees Awarded Scholarships
Joliet, IL (August 24, 2010)—The Silver Cross Foundation recently awarded seven scholarships to hospital employees to help further their education.
“Silver Cross is pleased to provide assistance to our motivated employees for continuing their education,” says Paul Pawlak, President/CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.
Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship
Manhattan resident Erica Adent, and Joliet resident Manuela Salinas are each the recipient of a $1,000 Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship. As the hospital’s newest scholarship, this award was funded by Donna and Jim Galligan, longtime Joliet residents and devoted supporters of Silver Cross Hospital.
Adent has been with Silver Cross for 6 years, currently serving as an ICU Shift Coordinator and is pursuing her BSN from the University of St. Francis. Salinas has been with Silver Cross for nearly 5 years as a transporter / clerk in the Emergency Department and is taking clinical lab science course work at Northern Illinois University.
Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarships
Romeoville resident Marta Bremer and Minooka resident Carolyn Simon are each the recipient of a $500 Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarship.
In memoriam, the Silver Cross Emergency Department started a scholarship in 1991 to assist those entering the nursing profession. The scholarship is named for former Silver Cross Emergency Department Registered Nurse Frances Thomas and is awarded to assist with tuition and expenses.
Bremer has been with Silver Cross for 7years and currently serves as a cardiovascular tech in the EKG Department and is currently pursuing her nursing degree. Simon has been with Silver Cross for over 2 years and currently serves as a Certified Sterile Processing Tech in the Sterile Processing Department in addition to pursuing her nursing degree.
Keyton H. Nixon Scholarship
Lockport resident Laura Barnes is the 2010 recipient of the $1,000 Keyton H. Nixon Scholarship. This scholarship, named after former Silver Cross President Keyton Nixon, is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing graduate studies in healthcare.
Barnes has been with Silver Cross for 2 years serving as an Ostomy Skin Care Coordinator in the Wound Care Department. She is a graduate of Queen of Peace High School. She received her BSN from SIU at Edwardsville, MSN from Lewis University and has begun pursuing a Post-Masters ANP Certification from the University of St. Francis.
Dorris Hubbs R.N. Silver Cross School of Nursing Alumnae Association Scholarship
The Dorris Hubbs scholarship was awarded to Coal City resident Lois Stone. Lois has been with Silver Cross for 22 years in various positions, most currently as a Registered Nurse in Cardiology. She is accepted at Governor’s State University to their RN to BSN completion program.
This scholarship was created in 2003 by the Silver Cross Nursing Alumnae Association to commemorate its centennial anniversary and support individuals interested in a career in nursing. The scholarship is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate registered nursing program or nursing certificate program.
Physician’s Legacy Scholarship
Lockport resident Kathleen M. Tucci is the 2010 recipient of a $500 Physician’s Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship has deep roots intertwined through the history of the organization. The Physician Legacy Grant transitioned from the previously known Medical Staff Grant. The name “Physician Legacy Scholarship” was created because of the Medical Executive Board’s desire to acknowledge physicians legacy of service and commitment to Silver Cross.
Tucci has been with Silver Cross for 12 years currently serving as a staff technologist in the Radiology / CT Department.
