Silver Cross Provided Free Prostate Screenings to 50 Local Men

Joliet, IL (October 13, 2010)— Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men.  But when diagnosed early, can be treatable.  Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with Advanced Urology Associates offered free prostate screenings to over 50 men during September.

Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer—a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a doctor, feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall, and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA).

“To maintain a healthy lifestyle, men should have yearly screenings,” says Dr. Sandeep Sawhney, urologist with Advanced Urology Associates. “And if you have a family or personal history of prostate cancer you should get screenings earlier in life and more frequently since you are at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is often slow-growing. “And with enhanced cancer screenings, more patients are diagnosed in its earliest stages,” says or Dr. Thomas Burns Jr., urologist with Advanced Urology Associates.  “As a result, for many men—especially those who are older—the tumor does not progress enough to cause major problems during their lifetime.” Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50, unless there is a family history of prostate cancer. Those men should be screened at age 40.

If you missed the screenings and are interested in scheduling a prostate screening, call Advanced Urology Associates for an appointment at (815) 741-3825.
