Childerguild Gives over $114,000 for Silver Cross Birthing Center

Joliet, IL (March 3, 2011)—Recently Childerguild presented Silver Cross with over $114,000 to support the hospital’s Birthing Center. For the past 100 years, the local charitable organization has donated more than $2.3 million to support women’s and children’s services at Silver Cross Hospital.

The balance of the funds will be used as payment against their pledge of $250,000 to fund the Post Partum unit in the Replacement Hospital.

Funds for this donation were raised from proceeds from the Childerguild Gift Shop and Annual Ball to benefit the Silver Cross Birthing Center.

“For 100 years Childerguild has been thrilled to support Silver Cross Hospital,” said Childerguild President Holly Tomashek. “Childerguild members are honored to continue this tradition of service by working on projects that will continue to benefit women and children who will be patients at the Silver Cross Replacement Hospital for generations to come.”

Silver Cross Hospital is in the process of building a replacement hospital at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and the I-355 extension, three short miles from its current campus, to ensure it can continue its mission of providing healthcare to all area residents for the next century. The Hospital will have 289-beds and be over 600,000 square feet. The project is on schedule and will open in February 2012.

The Birthing Center at Replacement Hospital will feature 30 large private, patient rooms designed to be acuity-adaptable, which means that the space, supplies and staff will be available in the room to deliver the appropriate level of care to the patient rather than transfer the patient between units as needs change. And, procedures can be performed at the bedside as needed.  The Birthing Center will feature mother/baby couplet care; the same nurse caring for the mother as well as the baby, which improves continuity and communication between the patient, her nurse and her physicians. The Birthing Center will also feature an admission and holding nursery and a special care nursery with eight infant care centers, a lactation consultation lounge, and an education conference room. It will also include three nesting rooms, an isolation nursery and treatment room. The Labor & Delivery unit will include 12 spacious rooms, with an 8 bed triage, two operating room suites, four bed recovery rooms, and an outpatient testing clinic located in the medical service building.

In addition, each room will include wireless internet, 30” flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor that can be controlled by the patient. There will also be a comfortable sofa-sleeper so family members can stay around the clock and be involved in the plan of care.

Silver Cross will continue to partner with Children’s Memorial Hospital for 24/7 pediatrician coverage to care for patients in the Pediatric Unit.  Children’s Memorial also has an outpatient center on the replacement hospital campus that opened last summer offering numerous pediatric specialist and other services.

At the recent annual meeting, the organization also installed new officers. They include: President Marcia Obman-Gray (Plainfield resident); First Co-Vice President Holly Tomashek (Joliet resident); Secretary Grisel Garcini (Mokena resident); Club Treasurer Donna Galligan (Joliet resident); Shop Treasurer Lynda McShane (Minooka resident); Events Vice President Michele Vana (Mokena resident). In celebration of the Replacement Hospital Grand Opening, the 2011 Annual Ball will be replaced by the hospital’s Grand Opening Gala on February 4, 2012.

About Childerguild
Founded in 1910, by 13 benevolent women who had no children of their own, Childerguild was formed to benefit the obstetrics and pediatrics departments at Silver Cross.

In the early years, Childerguild raised funds through private donations and by hosting card parties.  The members took a hands-on approach to this organization by sewing layettes and clown dolls for the pediatric patients at Silver Cross.  During the war years, members knitted sweaters for the military and gave financial support to the American Red Cross, Navy League and the Salvation Army.  As ardent supporters of the children in our community, Childerguild also made contributions to the Herald News free milk fund and the local community chest.

Today, Childerguild raises funds by hosting their annual Ball and by operating the hospital’s gift shop.  The Childerguild Gift Shop is open Monday through Saturday and is located in the Smith Pavilion lobby at Silver Cross Hospital.  Customers are offered many unique items in the Childerguild Gift Shop, which features distinctive gifts, jewelry, unique handbags, toys, books and darling baby clothes.  For more information, call the Silver Cross Volunteer Services Department at (815) 740-7117.
