Silver Cross Offers Health Screenings in September

Joliet, IL (August 15, 2011)— Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. If you are not sure if you are at risk for heart disease, now is the time to find out with a Baseline Cardiac Risk Assessment held in the LaVerne and Dorothy Brown Cardiovascular Institute at Silver Cross Hospital, 1300 Copperfield Ave., Joliet, Silver Cross Health Center in Homer Glen at 12701 W. 143rd St., and Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, 1870 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  This screening includes measurements of total cholesterol including HDL and LDL levels, blood glucose level, triglyceride level, blood pressure and body fat; 12-lead EKG, health and lifestyle evaluation, and a personal phone consultation with a registered cardiac nurse to review results and answer questions. A 12-hour fast is required. Cost is $40. Individuals who call (815) 740-7076 before Sept. 30 to schedule a Baseline Cardiovascular Risk Assessment will receive a complimentary sample box of chocolates from Dan’s Candies in Joliet. Just mention CHOCOLATE when scheduling your appointment.

Prostate Cancer Screenings
Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men.  But when diagnosed early, can be treatable. Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with Advanced Urology Associates will offer free prostate screenings for men Monday, September 12, Wednesday, September 14, and Thursday, September 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Specialty Care Pavilion on the hospital’s campus, 1300 Copperfield Ave., Suite  3020, Joliet. Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer—a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a doctor feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall, and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA). Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50, unless there is a family history of prostate cancer. Those men should be screened at age 40. To schedule an appointment, visit www.silvercross.org or call 1-888-HEAL (4325).
