Area Teacher Finds Relief on Her Feet
Diane Kemble is grateful for custom knee replacement surgery at Silver Cross Hospital
Joliet, IL (Sept. 12, 2011)— Diane Kemble of Shorewood is used to being on her feet. As a mother of four children and a full-time school teacher in Chicago, she spends most of her day standing. In the winter of 2010, while running to her car, Diane slipped on the ice and broke her right leg. While she did not seek immediate care, the growing dependency on her left leg was starting to affect her left knee. A year later, the knee pain became worse.
While undergoing a different surgery, Dr. Anuj Puppala was called in to examine Diane’s swelling legs. Diane immediately felt drawn to him and made an appointment a few weeks later. “He is just so warm and compassionate, so capable, I have great trust in him with my health and making the right decision,” says Kemble. Dr. Puppala identified that both of her knees were bone-to-bone, and would eventually need to be replaced. He provided alternative treatments and injections before opting a TruFit Customized Knee Replacement as the best option for her.
“Custom Fit Knee Replacement allows the surgeon to match the size and placement of the knee implant to the patient’s unique, pre-arthritic knee anatomy,” said Dr. Anuj Puppala, orthopedic surgeon on staff at Silver Cross Hospital.
Every person’s knee joint has subtle differences in shape and contour, but traditional surgical instruments that are used to place knee implants are one-size-fits all, TruMatch Knee technology uses CT and X-ray images of a patient’s knee to design and build surgical instruments that are customized for a patient’s unique knee anatomy. “With computer-guided precision, the knee implant is carefully put in place,” adds Dr. Puppala. “That is very important because a misaligned implant can cause pain and instability and will eventually fail.”
Kemble underwent a custom knee replacement for her left knee in July, and the next day, she was already back on her feet. “I heard all these horror stories about surgery, but I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly everything went. Even my recovery in physical therapy went well right away,” says Kemble. “I am so pleased I am scheduling my right knee replacement with Dr. Puppala for next summer. That’s a testament to how great of a surgeon he is, and how much this procedure has changed my life.”
