State Approves $21.6 million Cancer Center in New Lenox

Partnership between University of Chicago Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital

Joliet, IL (Oct. 26, 2010)—The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board today unanimously approved the construction of a $21.6 million cancer treatment center in New Lenox—on the Silver Cross Replacement Hospital campus.  The Cancer Center is a partnership between University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) and Silver Cross Hospital and will provide academic medical care for southwest suburban cancer patients close to home.  The 2-story outpatient facility will open in 2012.

“Patients will soon have the best of both worlds,” said Paul Pawlak, President and CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.  The Cancer Center will provide patients and their families with convenient access to University of Chicago Medical Center’s specialists and advanced therapies in a brand new facility in Will County.

Cancer Prevalent in Will County
The University of Chicago Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital is a strong positive response to the rapid increase in population and the growing need for cancer services in Will County, a need, that is confirmed by the fact that many cancer patients are leaving the area for treatment.  Each year, approximately 4,800 people in Will County are diagnosed with cancer and many of them travel long distances to major academic medical centers downtown or in other states.  In fact, UCMC currently cares for more than 1,400 cancer patients from Will County.

“Patients have choices when it comes to where they want to go for cancer diagnosis and treatment,” says Pawlak.  “By partnering with University of Chicago Medical Center, we are providing options and improving access.”  Pawlak continued, “We were extremely disappointed that another hospital in Will County was opposed to additional cancer services.   The approval by Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board recognizes the great benefits this project will bring to those suffering with a diagnosis of cancer”.

Leading Cancer Expertise
The University of Chicago Medical Center has consistently been ranked as one of the best cancer hospitals in U.S. News and World Report.  In addition, UCMC is one of only two hospitals in Illinois designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.  UCMC also offers more clinical trials than any other hospital in the Chicago area.

In the Cancer Center, patients will have access to clinical trials, medical oncologists and UCMC specialists, chemotherapy, infusion services, radiation therapy, cancer support groups, preventative screenings, clinical trials, and a comprehensive resource center.  The Center will have a new generation linear accelerator.  TruBeam™ uses image guided radiation therapy to provide the safest and most accurate results.

The Cancer Center will be located next to the medical office building already opened on the Silver Cross Replacement campus.  HSA, the same real estate developer that built the first medical office building, will lease the 20,000 sq ft. facility to UCMC and Silver Cross.  HSA plans to break ground in spring 2011.
