Silver Cross Replacement Hospital 90% Complete
New Lenox, IL (August 4, 2011) —On Wednesday The Times Weekly had the opportunity to visit the new Silver Cross Hospital facilities located in New Lenox. After much debate about whether or not to move Silver Cross to a new location, the decision was finally made to start construction on the new, state-of-the-art medical facility in 2008.
It may have geographically only moved four miles away, but the technological advancements and amenities are light years ahead of the old hospital.
The new hospital will feature some of the most advanced outpatient programs, including Aunt Martha’s community-based healthcare and veteran services.
After having broken ground on September 2008, the hospital is 95% constructed, with a projected grand opening scheduled for February 26, 2012. Construction on the 560,000 square foot hospital is on schedule and under its 395 million dollar budget, something we don’t hear very often nowadays.
The project has brought in up to 600 construction trade jobs and Silver Cross is also looking to create about 50 new professional medical positions when it officially opens its doors early next year.
Jeff Janicek, Construction Executive for Mortenson Construction demonstrated how the company is using what it calls VDC construction methods. “VDC stands for Virtual Design and Construction. We constructed three and four dimensional computer models up to seven times, before any of the actual construction work was started. This allows us to make sure everything is well designed before we build anything, sort of like a gigantic erector set that gets put together as efficiently as possible.”
Founded in 1954, Mortenson Construction has extensive experience in building everything from stadiums, schools, churches and built its first hospital in Minneapolis back in 1956.
Silver Cross’ Vice President of Operations Geoffrey Tryon and Executive Vice President and COO Mary Bakken gave us an enjoyable tour of the facilities where Bakken emphasized the importance of patient-family centered care. “We are looking at a healthcare facilty that enhances patient safety, eliminates environmental stressors and promotes healing by making the facilities more comfortable, and supportive for patients.”
Some of the amenities include self-registering kiosks for outpatient guests, a hospital coffee shop and deli that will feature Starbucks products and a beautiful serenity garden for patients and their families. In addition, a Walgreen’s drug store will be on the campus with a full service pharmacy for patient’s convenience.
One of the concerns people often have during their hospital stay is whether nurses are readily available when they are needed. At the new Silver Cross, nurses will be equipped with pagers that they will have on them, to tend to patients needs as efficiently as possible.
The hospital will also enhance its Behavioral Health and Outpatient Chemical Dependency programs by making them more accessible on the first floor with a private entrance.
Other highlights include the University of Chicago’s Cancer Center at Silver Cross with the most advanced cancer care in the southwest suburbs.
The new hospital is located off of the I-355 and Route 6 in New Lenox. It will have a total of 289 private room beds, 38 private treatment rooms in its ER. There will be eleven surgical suites, four interventional suites and four endoscopy procedure rooms.
