Environmental Services Going Greener on the New Campus
There are many new and exciting changes that will occur in the Environmental Services (EVS) Department as we move to the Replacement Hospital.
More Environmentally Friendly Surroundings
The new hard surface and carpet care equipment will be more environmentally friendly. The Tennant equipment being purchased uses a new innovative technology called EC-H2O that electronically converts water to perform like a powerful detergent. This chemical-free technology removes the environmental and human health issues associated with the use of daily cleaners. The result is a superior cleaner and healthier environment which increases employee safety.

Our new patient rooms will have no-finish flooring that will also help improve the environment and safety of our staff. The non-finish floor will eliminate the need to strip and refinish the floors with smelly caustic chemicals that the hospital staff will appreciate.
Further, we are purchasing a hard surface floor care piece of equipment that helps remove floor finish without the use of a very harsh and smelly floor stripper. There are also some more environmentally friendly floor finishes that we will trial.
With the implementation of our new sleeker more aesthetically pleasing EVS patient carts, we will be moving to moping all patient rooms with a micro-fiber mop technology that has proven to be more effective in removing dirt and bacteria than a traditional mop. “Not only is this a better, more sanitary way of moping a floor, it will eliminate the need for the EVS staff to empty a heavy bucket of dirty water after every three rooms reducing the potential for strained back injuries,” said Dan Thomas, director of Environmental Services for Silver Cross Hospital.
Enhancing Patient Family Centered Care
In addition, to enhance the patient family centered care experience, we have implemented the “Patient Touches Program” whereby our environmental staff will service the patient room three times during the day shift to insure that the room is kept clean and sanitized for the patient, family and guest.
Unveiling a New Look
Lastly, we are looking at new uniforms to be worn by our EVS staff to have a new, crisp, fresh look to serve our patients, visitors and staff in our new home.
After we move, there will be no EVS staff left behind and there are no plans for our department to continue any service on the Joliet campus. Any service that will be needed will be contracted as it is today in the Med Arts and Business Center buildings.
As the hospital receives the keys to the Replacement Hospital on November 1, we will be contracting the “construction cleaning,” getting us ready to move in, with Crothall Healthcare Service Inc. Their staff and project manager will work closely with Silver Cross staff in the coordination of all furniture, equipment and department set up to insure we are ready to move on February 26, 2012.
