The Ginny Wilhelm Foundation Delivers Teddy Bears for Pediatric Unit at Silver Cross Hospital

New Lenox, IL (October 9, 2012)— To comfort sick children, members from The Ginny Wilhelm Foundation, delivered 19 Gund Teddy Bears to the Foundation Office at Silver Cross Hospital. Donn and Linda Peterson from The Ginny Wilhelm Foundation dropped off the comforting stuffed toys to the hospital on September 28.

“We are grateful to Linda and Donn Peterson and the Ginny Wilhelm Foundation for their support for our youngest patients,” said Larry Johnson, Vice President of the Foundation at Silver Cross Hospital. “The donation of cuddly bears will make a difficult visit to the Emergency Room a little easier.”

About The Ginny Wilhelm Foundation

Pancreatic Cancer is a devastating disease that swiftly robs patients of both quality and length of life.  Although this cancer is less common than most cancers, it is nearly always fatal, giving patients less chance of survival than any other known cancer. It is known as the “silent killer” due to the difficulty in early diagnosis.

In December 2005, Ginny Wilhelm lost her battle with this vicious disease.  She was not only a very dear friend but a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who’s life was cut short. Like many other pancreatic cancer victims, Ginny was cheated out growing old, surrounded by loved ones.

The Ginny Wilhelm Foundation was established to support research for the early detection and the eventual cure of Pancreatic Cancer. For more information, visit http://gw-foundation.org/.

About Pediatric Services at the new Silver Cross Hospital

Silver Cross is certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health with having an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics. This recognition formally identifies Silver Cross as a hospital that provides the necessary resources and capabilities to address the emergency needs of critically ill and injured children. In addition, Silver Cross Hospital continues to partner with Children’s Memorial Hospital for 24/7 pediatrician coverage to care for patients in the Pediatric Unit. These board-certified Children's Memorial pediatric specialists are available 24hours a day, seven days a week at Silver Cross to help children of all ages including newborns. These specialists work in partnership with a child's regular pediatrician to provide the best possible care.

New Pediatric Unit

The new pediatric unit located on the 4th floor of Silver Cross Silver Hospital is licensed for 8 beds. Each large private, patient room has been designed to be acuity-adaptable, which means that the space, supplies and staff are available in the room to deliver the appropriate level of care to the patient rather than transfer the patient between units as needs change. And, procedures can be performed at the bedside.

In addition, each pediatric room includes wireless internet, 30” flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor with decorative colored lighting that can be controlled by the patient. There is also a comfortable sleeper sofa so parents can stay around the clock to support their child and be involved in the plan of care. A multi-purpose room is also available for education and family time.

The unit includes two pediatric high visibility rooms that are located directly across from the nurse’s station. The rooms have a video-monitoring feature for safety, especially when the parents are unable to be at the bedside and multiple sets of secured doors in conjunction with a security system for infant/child protection.
