Stroke Scare Leads to Successful Sinus Surgery for Elwood Man
Silver Cross offers a free sinus program April 6
Elwood resident Anthony Apostolou was suffering from a sinus infection that got worse after a few days. As he was doing yard work, he began having difficulty with his balance as he walked back and forth to his garage. At the same time he encountered problems with his equilibrium, he began experiencing intense pain from a severe headache. Concerned he was having a stroke, his family called 911 and had an ambulance transport him to Silver Cross Hospital’s Emergency Department where it was determined that he fortunately was not having a stroke. Instead, through a CT scan, a mass was discovered in his sinus cavity. He was then referred to Dr. Ankit Patel, ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgeon, for further treatment. After performing a scope exam, Dr. Patel could see the blockage. Apostolou then had a MRI test which verified that a large mass was in his sinus cavity. So on March 2, 2017 Dr. Patel performed outpatient surgery to remove the non-cancerous mass which was a large ball of mucus known as a frontoethmoid mucocele providing Apostolou with much needed relief.
