Silver Cross Offers Health Screenings in September

New Lenox, IL (August 30, 2012)— Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. If you are not sure if you are at risk for heart disease, now is the time to find out with a Baseline Cardiac Risk Assessment.  This screening includes measurements of total cholesterol including HDL and LDL levels, blood glucose level, triglyceride level, blood pressure and body fat; 12-lead EKG, health and lifestyle evaluation, and a personal phone consultation with a registered cardiac nurse to review results and answer questions. A 12-hour fast is required. Screening held at Silver Cross Hospital, 1900 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox; Silver Cross Health Center in Homer Glen at 12701 W. 143rd St.; and Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, 1870 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Cost is $40. Individuals who call to schedule a Baseline Cardiovascular Risk Assessment before September 30 will receive a complimentary sample box of chocolates from Dan’s Candies in Joliet. Just mention CHOCOLATE when scheduling your appointment to receive the complimentary box of Dan’s Candies at the time of the appointment. After all, dark chocolate is good for your heart! Blood Pressure Check
Silver Cross will offer free blood pressure checks daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. Walk-ins welcomed. For more information, call (708) 364-6337.
Silver Cross hospital will be performing free blood pressure checks at the Will County Farm Bureau on Thursday, September 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is open to the public and is located 100 Manhattan Rd., Joliet. Walk-ins welcome.
Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar Check
Silver Cross Hospital will be free performing blood pressure and blood sugar checks at the Laraway Senior Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 8. The event is open to the public and is located at Laraway School, 275 Laraway Rd., Joliet. Walk-ins welcome. They will also be at the Sharefest Health & Safety Expo on Saturday, September 8 on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spencer Point School, 1721 Spencer Road  New Lenox. Walk-ins welcome.
Calcium Artery Scoring
Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and the Silver Cross Health Center—Homer Glen offers a quick and painless test using a high speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine your risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is ideal for men over age 45 and women over age 55 who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Prostate Cancer Screenings
Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men.  But when diagnosed early, can be treatable. Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with Advanced Urology Associates will offer free prostate screenings for men Wednesday, September 19 and Tuesday, September 25 from 3-4 p.m. at Advanced Urology, Silver Cross Hospital pavilion A, Suite 430, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer—a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a doctor feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall, and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA). Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50, unless there is a family history of prostate cancer. Those men should be screened at age 40. Scoliosis Screening
Dr. Anthony Rinella, spine surgeon, will offer free scoliosis screenings on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 West 143rd St., Homer Glen. To register, call (877) 694-7722. The screenings are free and available for children and adults.

Silver Cross Offers Health Education Classes in September

New Lenox, IL (August 29, 2012)— Silver Cross Hospital provides an AHA Healthcare Provider CPR class for LPNs, RNs, Paramedics, EMTs, and CNAs. This class teaches one and two person, infant, child and adult CPR as well as rescue from choking. The class will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center room 2A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.
