Silver Cross Encore Shop Plans Grand Re-Opening Oct 5 & 6

Resale store expands and moves to new location on former hospital’s Joliet campus
New Lenox, IL (Sept. 11, 2012)—The Silver Cross Encore Shop is moving to the Hershman Building, 1301 Copperfield Ave., Joliet—on the former Silver Cross Hospital campus.  The newly expanded store will re-open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18 featuring a wide selection of gently used adult and children’s clothing, household items, jewelry, books and seasonal decorations.
A Grand Re-Opening Celebration has been planned for Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Shoppers will receive a complimentary gift bag and have an opportunity to a win one of several Walmart Gift Cards.
For over 50 years the Encore Shop has been operated by a volunteer group of women called the Silver Cross Advisory Board.  In the past 11 years, the Advisory Board has donated more than $935,000 to Silver Cross for the purchase of X-ray equipment for the Emergency Department, ICU beds, laptop computers for Home Health nurses, dialysis and mammography equipment, surgery carts and instruments, cardiac software, and a new pick-up truck used to maintain the grounds of the hospital campus.  The group recently completed a $75,000 pledge to purchase the water feature in the Dralle Serenity Garden outside the new Silver Cross Hospital at I-355 and Route 6 in New Lenox.
Donations Welcome
Beginning Sept. 19, the Encore Shop will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at the new Encore Shop in Joliet or in the collection bin outside Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.  For more information, call either the Encore Shop at (815) 300-7642 or Volunteers Services at Silver Cross Hospital at (815) 300-7117.

BMI Surgery at Silver Cross rebuilds confidence of Lockport woman after bariatric surgery

New Lenox, IL (August 31, 2012) — Marcia Dick, of Lockport, had learned to get used to her overweight body for over 60 years, but that didn’t mean she could forget about it.  Fad diets and fitness plans often left her depressed and feeling weak, causing her to give up quickly. Silver Cross Offers Health Screenings in September

New Lenox, IL (August 30, 2012)— Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. If you are not sure if you are at risk for heart disease, now is the time to find out with a Baseline Cardiac Risk Assessment.  This screening includes measurements of total cholesterol including HDL and LDL levels, blood glucose level, triglyceride level, blood pressure and body fat; 12-lead EKG, health and lifestyle evaluation, and a personal phone consultation with a registered cardiac nurse to review results and answer questions. A 12-hour fast is required. Blood Pressure Check
Silver Cross will offer free blood pressure checks daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. Walk-ins welcomed. For more information, call (708) 364-6337.
Silver Cross hospital will be performing free blood pressure checks at the Will County Farm Bureau on Thursday, September 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is open to the public and is located 100 Manhattan Rd., Joliet. Walk-ins welcome.
Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar Check
Silver Cross Hospital will be free performing blood pressure and blood sugar checks at the Laraway Senior Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 8. The event is open to the public and is located at Laraway School, 275 Laraway Rd., Joliet. Walk-ins welcome. They will also be at the Sharefest Health & Safety Expo on Saturday, September 8 on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spencer Point School, 1721 Spencer Road  New Lenox. Walk-ins welcome.
Calcium Artery Scoring
Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and the Silver Cross Health Center—Homer Glen offers a quick and painless test using a high speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine your risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is ideal for men over age 45 and women over age 55 who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Prostate Cancer Screenings
Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men.  But when diagnosed early, can be treatable. Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with Advanced Urology Associates will offer free prostate screenings for men Wednesday, September 19 and Tuesday, September 25 from 3-4 p.m. at Advanced Urology, Silver Cross Hospital pavilion A, Suite 430, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer—a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a doctor feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall, and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA). Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50, unless there is a family history of prostate cancer. Those men should be screened at age 40. Scoliosis Screening
Dr. Anthony Rinella, spine surgeon, will offer free scoliosis screenings on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 West 143rd St., Homer Glen. To register, call (877) 694-7722. The screenings are free and available for children and adults.
