A Patient’s Best Friend

Silver Cross Hospital Offers Pet Therapy

The comforting affects of animals have been noticed through the years. Even Florence Nightingale recommended “a small pet animal” as an “excellent companion for the sick” and Laura Valencik, director of volunteer services at Silver Cross Hospital, agrees. She has been hard at work in creating a comprehensive pet therapy program at the hospital and is excited for patients to experience the healing effects of a wagging tail.

Problems Getting Pregnant?

Silver Cross Holds Free Fertility lecture on Nov. 2

Joliet, IL (October 28, 2010)—For many couples infertility is a crisis. However, you should know that infertility or reproductive problems are often treatable.

Men and women are equally likely to have a fertility problem. In about 1 in 5 infertile couples, both partners have contributing problems, and in about 15% of couples, no cause is found after all tests have been done. A diagnosis of infertility is not necessarily a verdict of sterility, most couples who seek help can eventually bear a child, either on their own or with medical assistance.

“Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent infertility. As people age, the chances of naturally conceiving are dramatically reduced.   Overall, approximately 10% of reproductive aged couples will have problems conceiving” says Dr. David Cohen, reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist with University of Chicago at Silver Cross Hospital.

Navigating through infertility can be stressful. With so many emotions and so many opinions floating around, it can be difficult to find answers. Some common myths around infertility include:

  • Infertility is a female problem. Women and men bear nearly equal responsibility when it comes to infertility. Both male and female problems may be elicited during an infertility evaluation and more rarely both individuals have a problem
  • Everyone else gets pregnant easily. A normally fertile couple has only about a 25% chance of conceiving each month. This number decreases as a woman ages.
  • Be patient; you'll get pregnant with time. Infertility is a medical problem that usually requires treatment. Many of those who complete an infertility evaluation will respond to treatment with a successful pregnancy.
  • You're probably doing "it" wrong. Infertility is a medical condition, not a sexual disorder. However, the timing of sexual intercourse is crucial to the conception process.

If you or your partner is concerned for any reason about your ability to conceive, please join us for a free program, “Problems Getting Pregnant”. Men and women are invited to join Dr. David Cohen to learn about the myths, truths and various treatment methods currently available for infertility on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m.  The free program will be held at the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, 1870 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  To register to attend, visit or call 1-888-660-HEAL (4325).
