We appreciate and encourage family members and friends to visit our patients, especially when it is convenient for you and desired by the patient. You play an important role in supporting your loved one’s physical, mental and emotional recovery. To make your experience at Silver Cross smooth and enjoyable, we have put together some helpful information for you and your family. Please don’t hesitate to contact our Intensive Care team or another member of our staff to assist you or answer any questions that arise.
You are welcome to visit patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However at times, you may be asked to wait in the ICU family lounge during procedures, reports or assessments. This assures that our patients have the privacy they deserve and need. Also for the privacy of all our patients, while in the ICU, please contain your visit to the patient’s room.
Due to our patients’ need for rest and limited space, only 2 to 3 visitors are allowed in the room at one time. Children age 12 and younger may visit patients in the ICU when accompanied by an adult for a limited time.
For your convenience, a family lounge and rest rooms are available just outside the ICU, but please do not leave children unattended. There is also a phone in the lounge for your use and for your family members to reach you. The number is (815) 300-2919. No food or drink is allowed in the patient’s room. Please help us in keeping our lounge clean for all to enjoy. We also ask, for your protection, that you do not stand in the halls. Wheelchairs, beds and other equipment regularly travel through our hallways.
Each family is requested to designate one spokesperson who will call for updates. Other family members and friends should contact the spokesperson for information. Please feel free to ask questions while you are here. We will do our very best to explain. We understand this is a stressful time for not only our patients, but their families as well.
Surgical patients may come to us directly from the operating room with the ICU staff providing the recovery room care. This care usually lasts about one hour, and you may be asked to wait in the ICU family lounge. Some patients come to the ICU after spending time in the Recovery Room. If this is the case, the ICU staff provides initial care and will have the patient ready for your visit shortly.
While in the ICU, patients will be wearing a hospital gown. Feel free to bring items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, glasses, dentures, hearing aids, robe and house shoes. We ask that you do not bring flowers into the unit to help prevent infections.
