Joliet, IL (August 30, 2011)— Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men. but when diagnosed early, can be treatable. In honor of National Prostate Cancer Awareness month, Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with Advanced Urology Associates will offer free prostate screenings on Monday, Sept. 12, Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, Sept. 15, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Brown Cardiovascular Institute on Silver Cross Hospital’s campus, 1300 Copperfield Ave., Joliet.
Prostate cancer is often slow-growing. “And with enhanced cancer screenings, more patients are diagnosed in its earliest stages,” says or Dr. Thomas Burns Jr., urologist with Advanced Urology Associates. “As a result, for many men—especially those who are older—the tumor does not progress enough to cause major problems during their lifetime.” Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50, unless there is a family history of prostate cancer. Those men should be screened at age 40. .
The screenings includes a digital rectal exam and blood test. Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer—a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a doctor feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall, and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA).
