Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission Brings Education and Job Opportunities to Area Students

Commission to offer scholarships to local students for nursing program

The Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission, a new not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create a stronger, healthier future for Joliet’s East Side, announced today that Silver Cross Hospital and Joliet Junior College (JJC) are partnering to offer scholarships to Joliet-area students for a Basic Nurse Assistant Certification program.

“This is exactly what I hoped the new Healthy Community Commission would be doing—providing more opportunities to people in our community,” said Margie Woods, Chairperson of the Healthy Community Commission. “This is just the beginning of how we can make jobs available to local residents.”

Silver Cross will select and support 12 students, eight students from Silver Cross and four students from the community. The Healthy Community Commission will be heavily involved in the selection process and support the four students from the community through the scholarship program.

“Silver Cross continues to show its commitment to the young people of Joliet by encouraging their education and preparing them for a career in the growing health care field,” said Betty Washington, a Silver Cross Health Community Commission board member and President of the Joliet Community Action Network.

According to Woods, the candidates selected will receive full tuition at JJC in addition to books, uniforms, test fees and all CPR trainings which are also covered by the scholarship. One of the criteria established by the Commission is that scholarship recipients live in a local zip code: 60432, 60433 or 60436.

In addition to coordinating and enhancing existing programs for workforce development, education and business growth, like the CNA program, the Healthy Community Commission is tasked with creating a stronger, healthier future for Joliet’s East Side and will chart the course for the Maple Road campus if the new Silver Cross Hospital on Route 6 and I-355 is approved.

The Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission will ensure long-term community input on the re-use of the existing Silver Cross campus. However, positive economic and job opportunities that would benefit Joliet’s East Side and beyond, will not be possible if the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board does not approve Silver Cross’ plans for a replacement hospital.

Help Silver Cross bring new opportunities to Joliet and the greater Will County area by supporting its plans to build a replacement hospital which will provide more services, state-of-the-art technology and better access to all families.

Please send a letter of support to the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board.
