As a 34-year Silver Cross nurse and longtime Joliet resident, I am excited by the Board of Directors decision to build a replacement hospital at the I-355 exchange just three miles down the road. I can only imagine what healthcare opportunities lie ahead for our patients in a new facility—at this time in my life I am witnessing the greater healthcare needs of my own family—parents, children, and grandchildren needing access to superior healthcare.

It was just a few weeks ago that our Board of Directors came to the painstaking yet smart decision that a replacement hospital is the best solution to continue to meet the healthcare demands of our patients both today and in the future. The majority of our Board members were born and raised in Joliet—like myself, so I can appreciate what a difficult decision this must have been. But I have also had the opportunity to work closely with my peers in developing solutions on how we are going to continue to care for patients in a facility that has been remodeled and overhauled many times in the last 100 years. In reviewing the options and alternatives I am quite convinced that the need for the replacement hospital is the best decision.

The replacement hospital will allow us to design the facility to improve all aspects of the healthcare experience for patients, family members and our staff. For example, all 289 rooms will be private and significantly larger than any patient room in the current hospital. This will provide patients more privacy as well as equip rooms with the latest technology and treatments brought to them at the bedside. The improved design will also allow departments within the hospital to be located in close proximity so that the staff can spend less time retrieving supplies and more time at the patient bedside. Over the years, our patients and staff have told us this is important to them. We listened and are responding.

More than half of all our patients and staff live outside of the Joliet City limits. Just as patients in other areas of Will County choose Silver Cross, I am confident that my fellow Joliet residents will continue to trust us with their care in our new location—just as they have for over 100 years. On behalf of the Silver Cross nursing team, we look forward to taking care of you in our new home.

Sincerely,
Mary Brenczewski, RN, MSN
