For over 30 years, Silver Cross has served as the resource hospital for the Will-Grundy EMS System training thousands of area paramedics. We currently provide emergency care to more than 50,000 patients a year in our Emergency Department. But as we keep pace with the population growth, we will outgrow our newly expanded ED in five years. If we want to continue providing lifesaving care for area residents for many years to come, it’s imperative that we build a replacement hospital—there’s just no other way at our current location.
Let me share with you just one reason why. Half of the patients admitted to the hospital come through the ED, located on the south end of our 50-acre campus. The patient bed tower is on the opposite end and creating a transportation nightmare with a walk for sick patients that is the length of a football field. If we remain in our current location, this would never improve.
What would improve in a replacement facility is the medical services and technology that we could provide our patients while still caring for our neighbors on the Joliet’s east side with an urgent care facility. Under the Illinois Medical Services Act, patients needing emergency care would still be taken to the closest hospital. Remember, we are moving just three miles away. And with our new location easily accessible off of I-355 and I-80, it ’ll be much quicker for patients and ambulances to come to Silver Cross in a life-threatening situation. With the replacement hospital, over the next 50 years, we could do so much more and save many more lives.
Even if we could save just one more life with a replacement hospital, the move would be well worth the investment in the future of our community.
