Silver Cross Named to National 100 Top Hospitals List for 4 Years in a Row

For the fourth straight year, Silver Cross Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals®.

The award is given by Thomson Healthcare—formerly Solucient—a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. Silver Cross is the only hospital in Illinois to win the award for the last four years in a row.

According to Thomson Healthcare, only 15 hospitals in the nation have been recognized as a “100 Top Hospitals” winner for the last four consecutive years. And only 44 of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals have received the award four times.

To win, a hospital must keep up with new standards of care and performance. The award means patients:

  • have higher survival rates.
  • are less likely to have complications.
  • are cared for in a safer environment.

Thomson Healthcare estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as patients at the 100 Top Hospitals:

  • More than 120,000 additional patients would survive each year.
  • More than 138,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.

Unlike other awards that distinguish hospitals on just one small area of care, the 100 Top Hospitals National Award looks at broader hospital-wide performance recognizing excellence across all key measures including clinical outcomes, patient safety and efficiency of care. In effect, hospitals that make the 100 Too Hospitals National list are the best of the best as documented by 100 percent objective, publicly available data. It is also important to note that the winners don’t apply for or pay for the award.

Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president in the Center for Healthcare Improvement at Thomson Healthcare, says the 100 Top winners, including Silver Cross, rank above the top 90 percent on hospital-wide performance when compared with its national peers. Silver Cross did extremely well across several key measures ranking significantly higher than other like hospitals for its low mortality (death) rate, complication rate, congestive heart failure care and surgical care.
