Recently, Childerguild presented Silver Cross with $251,000, representing the largest annual donation in the group’s history of giving to the hospital. The funds will go to support the hospital’s Women and Infant Services Birthing Center including the Post Partum unit and Pediatrics unit. For the past 103 years, the local charitable organization has donated more than $2.3 million to support women’s and children’s services at Silver Cross Hospital.
“For 102 years Childerguild has been thrilled to support Silver Cross Hospital,” said new Childerguild President Phyllis Etheridge. “Childerguild members are honored to continue this tradition of service by working on projects that will continue to benefit women and children who will be patients at the new Silver Cross Hospital for generations to come.”
In the past, Childerguild’s donations have been used to purchase equipment for the Maternal Child Department. This includes a VeinViewer, Abaer Newborn Hearing tester and electronic fetal monitor.
Silver Cross’s new replacement hospitalis located at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and I-355 in New Lenox, ensuring it can continue its mission of providing healthcare to all area residents for the next century. The Hospital has 289-beds and is over 600,000 square feet.

The Women and Infant Services Birthing Center at new the Silver Cross Hospital features 30 large private, patient rooms designed to be acuity-adaptable, which means that the space, supplies and staff are available in the room to deliver the appropriate level of care to the patient rather than transfer the patient between units as needs change. And, procedures can be performed at the bedside as needed. The Birthing Center features mother/baby couplet care; the same nurse caring for the mother as well as the baby, which improves continuity and communication between the patient, her nurse and her physicians. The Birthing Center also features an admission and holding nursery and a special care nursery with eight infant care centers, a lactation consultation lounge, and an education conference room. It also includes three nesting rooms, an isolation nursery and treatment room. The Labor & Delivery unit includes 12 spacious rooms, with an 8 bed triage, two operating room suites, four bed recovery rooms, and an outpatient testing clinic located in the medical service building.
In addition, each room includes wireless internet, 30” flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor that can be controlled by the patient. There also is a comfortable sofa-sleeper so family members can stay around the clock and be involved in the plan of care.
Silver Cross continues to partner with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago for 24/7 pediatrician coverage to care for patients in the Pediatric Unit. Also the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago has an outpatient center on the new hospital campus offering numerous pediatric specialist and other services.

Founded in 1910, by 13 benevolent women who had no children of their own, Childerguild was formed to benefit the obstetrics and pediatrics departments at Silver Cross Hospital.
In the early years, Childerguild raised funds through private donations and by hosting card parties. The members took a hands-on approach to this organization by sewing layettes and clown dolls for the pediatric patients at Silver Cross. During the war years, members knitted sweaters for the military and gave financial support to the American Red Cross, Navy League and the Salvation Army. As ardent supporters of the children in our community, Childerguild also made contributions to the Herald News free milk fund and the local community chest.
