Silver Cross Builds on Commitment with New Services/Facilities
Joliet, IL (February 22, 2010)—Silver Cross Hospital continues to set the standard for care in Will County and the southwest suburbs with new and enhanced partnerships, services and facilities. In the past year, the five-time 100 Top Hospitals National Award-winner, opened the first licensed free-standing emergency center in the State and a unique women’s health center. Silver Cross is also building a state-of-the-art replacement hospital at I-355 and Route 6 in New Lenox. The new hospital is on schedule to open in February 2012.
“Even with the recession troubling the nation, this is an exciting time for healthcare in Will County,” said Paul Pawlak, President/CEO of Silver Cross Hospital. “The new hospital is bringing more jobs, as well as continuing quality healthcare to the region.”
Construction of the $400 million replacement hospital is nearly 40% completed and has already created over hundreds of jobs. The impressive 289-bed hospital is being built using evidence-based design, which has been proven to help in the healing process and contribute to a speedier recovery for patients. Some of the many ways that evidence-based design is being integrated into the replacement hospital is with large, private patient rooms, natural and enhanced lighting, sound and noise control, cheerful yet calming colors, ties to nature, bedside care and dedicated family areas.
“Several design elements are associated with better quality outcomes and higher patient satisfaction,” says Peggy Gricus, Vice President of Patient Care at Silver Cross. “For example, reducing hospital noise can improve patient recovery and sleep time and reduce depression. And, factors such as increased sunlight in patient rooms, views of nature, artwork, and even music also reduce patient stress, leading to improved outcomes.”

Unique Place for Women’s Care
Patients are already experiencing many of these healing elements in the new Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, which opened on the future hospital campus this past October. Set in a soothing, spa-like environment, the Center for Women’s Health offers a variety of healthcare services designed around a woman’s needs and lifestyle.
“We recognize that women sit at the center of multiple worlds,” said Marybeth Antone, Administrative Director for the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health. “And because each individual woman matters to so many, her health matters to us. It matters that she gets regular health screenings. And it matters that she gets the very best care close to home.”
The Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health represents a unique concept in women’s healthcare and is the first in the region to provide an advanced level of diagnostics coupled with specialized care for women in one convenient location. The Center offers the latest breast cancer testing available—full field digital mammography, breast ultrasound and breast biopsies, bone densitometry and baseline heart screenings.
“Diagnostic test results are available the same day as your appointment and screening results within just 24 hours,” said Antone. “And before you ever leave the Center, you will have the opportunity to consult with a board certified radiologist or meet with a registered nurse to assist with the next steps in your care. We even have a hotline for you to call to hear your screening mammography results to help alleviate any anxiety.”
In addition to advanced diagnostic services, women can see top-notch specialists including an uro-gynecologist and invitro-fertilization specialist, attend a breast cancer support group or chat with physicians on topics such as heart disease, new mammogram guidelines and uterine fibroids at evening seminars. For more information, call 1-888-660-HEAL (4325) or visit www.Imatter.silvercross.org. To schedule an appointment for a test, call (815) 740-7076.
The Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health is located in the first medical office building on the Replacement Hospital campus. The two-story Silver Cross Health Center is also the home to the Children’s Memorial Outpatient Center, Hinsdale Orthopaedics Associates, Partners in Obstetrics and Women’s Health, Advanced Eye Care and Spectrum Eye Institute. A second larger medical services building will open in early 2012 offering hospital outpatient services and even more physician offices.
24/7 Emergency Care Close to Home
In addition to bringing women’s health services close to home, Silver Cross has brought more of its ‘100 Top’ emergency care out to the some of the communities it serves. Last summer, Silver Cross opened the first licensed free-standing emergency center in the State. The Emergency Center is located at 143rd St. and Bell Road in Homer Glen and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Silver Cross Hospital’s board certified emergency medicine physicians and emergency trained nurses and paramedics. Patients can check wait times—if any at www.silvercross.org for both the Homer Glen Free-Standing Emergency Care Center as well as Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.
The Silver Cross Free-Standing Emergency Care Center includes 5 private exam rooms and 1 minor procedure room. Laboratory and diagnostic imaging services including: MRI, CT, X-rays, EKGs are also available in the building 24/7 to ensure timely and accurate diagnosis. In addition, an ambulance and two paramedics are on-site. There are also several physicians in the building specializing in family practice, pediatrics, cardiology, spine surgery, colorectal surgery, urology and podiatry.
“Now residents don’t have to travel far to seek emergency care to treat a variety of serious illnesses and injuries, such as extreme fevers, broken bones, and serious cuts,” said Dr. Dan Checco, Medical Director of the Silver Cross Free-Standing Emergency Care Center. “We are prepared to take care of anything at the Free-Standing Emergency Care Center.”
