Cafeteria, Java City & Vending

Cafeteria

The cafeteria at Silver Cross Hospital is located near the Francis Pavilion on the lower level and features a wide selection of foods, snacks and beverages. The cafeteria is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hot food is available during the following times:

Dinner4:30-7 p.m.

Java City

Java City is located in the Smith Pavilion Lobby. In addition to fresh-brewed flavored coffees, other items for purchase include juice, muffins, sandwiches and snacks. Java City is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Vending

Vending machines for snacks and beverages are located in the cafeteria dining room, Emergency Department, Intensive Care visitors lounge located on the 2nd floor and in the Specialty Care Pavilion on the lower level. They are available 24 hours a day.

Identification

Your safety is our priority. Upon admission, you will be given a wristband for identification purposes. The number or barcode on your bracelet will identify all of your tests and procedures. Please leave it on at all times while you are at the hospital. And alert your caregiver if it becomes damaged during your stay.

All employees, volunteers and physicians can be identified by their Silver Cross identification badge, which includes their name, job title and photograph. Visitors can be identified by a Silver Cross Hospital visitor's badge. If you have any concerns, please contact Security at ext. 7301.

Internal Way-Finding

To assist you and your guests in navigating your way through Silver Cross, we have developed a ceiling flag system with different symbols designating different areas of the hospital. You can find a listing of these symbols near the entrances and elevators throughout the hospital. Simply look for your destination, then, follow the corresponding symbol to your destination.

If you would rather have an employee escort you to your destination, please ask a staff member. It is our pleasure to escort patients and visitors.

Mail & Flower Delivery

Volunteers and Service Ambassadors deliver mail and e-cards each morning. Letters and packages that arrive after you are discharged will be forwarded to your home. Outgoing mail can be left at the nurses' station or given to a volunteer. If you receive flowers while hospitalized, a florist or volunteer will deliver the arrangement to your room.

A 24-hour flower vending machine is located on the lower level of the Francis Lobby. Fresh flower arrangements are priced at $15 & $20. Cash or credit card purchase is available.

Newspapers

A complimentary issue of the Herald News will be delivered daily to your room by our Volunteer staff. Both the Herald News and Chicago Sun-Times Newspapers can also be purchased in the cafeteria.

Nurse Call System

Convenient and quick communication with the nursing staff is available by pressing the nurse call button on your bedside remote. When you are admitted to the room, you will be shown where the call button is located and how to use it. When you press the nurse call button, an operator at then Nurses' Station will answer and relay your message to your nurse. Each restroom also has an emergency cord, should you require assistance.

Parking

Parking for patients and visitors is available at Maple Road (Route 6). Parking is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All parking at Silver Cross Hospital is free of charge. Patients and visitors are cautioned not to park in reserved areas or designated areas. Please be sure to lock your car.

Valet Parking

Free valet parking is available at the entrance to the Smith Pavilion, Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Shuttle Bus

The Silver Cross Shuttle Bus provides convenient transportation free of charge to the parking areas, Smith Pavilion, Specialty Care Pavilion, Keck Emergency Pavilion and Medical Arts Building. This service is available Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Courtesy Cart Service

The golf cart service will pick you up at your vehicle, bring you to the Smith Pavilion, Specialty Care or Keck Emergency Pavilion entrances, and then return you to your vehicle upon your departure. This service is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After-hours, the Security Department transports visitors to their vehicles by request. All services can be contacted by calling ext. 7301 or by asking the service ambassador to call the service for a transport via radio.

Patient Meals

Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of your treatment and recovery. Silver Cross Hospital makes every attempt to provide nutritious meals that are prepared according to your doctor's orders.

Patients are served breakfast between 7:15 and 8:15 a.m.; lunch between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.; and dinner between 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. Occasionally your meal will be delayed if you are scheduled for a special test or treatment. Whenever possible, you will be served after your examination or test.

Nutrition Services

The hospital maintains a staff of full-time registered dietitians to meet your dietary needs during your hospitalization. A menu-clerk will assist you with selecting your meals each day. If you have any questions about your meals or diet, call ext. 7444.

Patient Concerns

Silver Cross has been recognized as one of America's Most Friendliest Hospitals by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers by focusing on patient satisfaction. If you have a concern regarding your hospital visit, please call the Customer Service Hotline at ext. 2772. All concerns will be investigated and resolved as soon as possible. Concerns will be received without blame and will not compromise future access to care.

Patient Valuables

As we cannot accept responsibility for valuables left in your room, we strongly encourage you to give money, medications, credit cards, wallet, jewelry, etc. to a family member or close friend to take home. Or, ask your nurse to deposit items of value in the hospital safe. An itemized receipt and claim ticket will be provided to you. If you lose something, notify the nursing staff immediately and every effort will be made to help you find it. To inquire about lost items, please call the Security office at ext. 7301.

Reading Material

Free reading materials, including crossword and word search puzzles are available on the patient library cart. The cart visits patient floors daily but requests can be made by calling ext. 7117.

Telephones are provided in each patient room. Your family and friends may call you in your room by dialing (815) 740-1234 and the patient's room number. To dial outside the hospital, please follow the instructions below according to the area you are dialing.

Hospital Information Operator "O"

Long distance calls are billed to your home, calling card or collect. We have selected Discount Operator IOS for Long Distance Service. For IOS Customer Service, dial 1-800-226-2606. You have the right to reach other long distance carriers from this telephone. You can do so by dialing "0" and asking the Operator to connect you to your long distance carrier.

Cellular Phones

Cellular phone use is prohibited in patient care areas. Electromagnetic Interference in the hospital environment can cause medical devices to malfunction and poses a significant risk to patient safety. You may use your cell phone in public areas of the hospital, including the cafeteria, lobbies, and outside the facility.

Tobacco-Free Campus

For the health and safety of all, Silver Cross has a tobacco-free campus. Smoking or the use of any tobacco products is prohibited inside and outside the hospital throughout the hospital's main campus and at all ancillary facilities. Thank you for your cooperation.

Visiting Hours

Visitors can be good medicine for patients. Family members and friends are welcome to visit. However, patient care is our primary concern at Silver Cross Hospital and in order to enhance the quality of care, specific visiting hours have been established for each unit. Visiting hours and regulations are posted on each unit. Please follow these guidelines. If you need additional information, please check with the nurse on the unit.

Visitor Passes

For your safety, all visitors are asked to obtain a visitor's pass upon entrance to Silver Cross Hospital. The visitor passes are color coded and marked with the name of the entrance. They also include a symbol that corresponds to the hospital's Internal Way-finding system. Visitors are asked to return their passes when exiting the facility.

Wireless Internet Access

Patients and visitors at Silver Cross Hospital can use their wireless-equipped laptop computers and other wireless devices to access the Internet. The complimentary high speed Internet access is available in all public areas of the hospital. It is separate from the Hospital's computer network to ensure privacy and security. There is no cost for patients and visitors to access the wireless network.

Your Room

Silver Cross Hospital patient rooms are predominately private. We cannot guarantee any room assignment in advance because the hospital's patient population changes without notice and the rooms must be assigned according to the medical needs of all patients.

Your room was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before your arrival and will be cleaned daily while you are here. If you would like to compliment on its cleanliness, or, if it is not cleaned to your satisfaction, please call our Environmental Services Department at ext. 7166.

All rooms in the hospital are centrally heated and air-conditioned. If your room temperature is not comfortable, please notify Building Services at ext. 7160.

Your Bed

Hospital beds are electrically operated and your nurse will show you how to work your bed properly. Bedrails are provided for your protection. They may be raised at night if you are resting or during the day if you are resting, recovering from surgery or taking certain medications.
