Continence Rehabilitation Center

The Problem

Urinary incontinence, simply defined, means the uncontrolled release of urine in inappropriate times and place. The problem itself is physical, but it can evoke emotional consequences. Whether you occasionally leak a small amount, dribble constantly, or your bladder uncontrollably empties, there is help available.

The Continence Rehabilitation Center (CRC) at Silver Cross deals exclusively with the assessment and treatment of urinary incontinence.

A common misconception is that urinary incontinence is a natural part of aging. This is untrue. Incontinence affects approximately 10 million Americans of all ages. The problem typically results from a variety of causes including pregnancy and childbearing, urinary tract infections, constipation, medication, pelvic surgery, hormonal imbalance, enlarged prostate, neurologic disorders or underlying conditions such as obesity or diabetes.

Signs & Symptoms

If you leak urine...

  • when you sneeze, cough, laugh, walk or exercise
  • when you can't get into the bathroom quickly enough
  • when you drink even a small amount of liquid or touch running water

Or you may...

  • often lose a small amount of urine during the day or night
  • get up often during the night to go to the bathroom
  • go to the bathroom often to avoid accidents
  • spend a long time at the toilet but produce only a weak dribbling stream of urine and still feel your bladder is full
  • often feel as if you have to empty your bladder but can't

Solutions

The CRC is staffed by Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses who will work in collaboration with your physician. If you currently are not under the care of a physician, referrals will be made available. The services of the center are primarily rehabilitative and designed to help you improve your quality of life.
