It wasn’t until after an emergency appendectomy that doctors discovered Indalia Berner had a large ovarian cyst. The Chicago-based teacher didn’t have any signs or symptoms of the cyst, but her doctors recommended that she deal with the issue.

Despite living in Chicago, Berner, 28, said she likes to come down to Silver Cross. In the fall, she met with Dr. Judy Sun, obstetrician and gynecologist. Berner said she would have slight pain in the area of her ovary, but nothing severe enough to warrant worry. However, after seeing Dr. Sun, she knew it would require having surgery to remove it.

“Dr. Sun said that it was getting larger and enveloping the ovary, and that it could eventually burst,” Berner said. Due to the size of the cyst, Dr. Sun said she could no longer see any ovarian tissue remaining, and told Berner the best option would be to remove the ovary completely.

Berner said she was a little concerned about how the surgery would impact her on having children in the future, but Dr. Sun reassured her that her other ovary was healthy.

Dr. Sun said it’s not uncommon for a cyst to grow large enough that the ovary needs to be removed. While ovarian cysts are common, not all require surgery.

“We may observe the cyst, and depending on the type, they may resolve on their own,” Dr. Sun said. “Sometimes they have benign characteristics, and sometimes they look suspicious for cancer.

So the management depends on different factors.”

Symptoms often vary with every woman, Dr. Sun said. Some of the symptoms include pain and discomfort, menstrual changes, and bowel or bladder symptoms. Some women, like Berner, don’t have any symptoms at all.

Berner’s surgery was completed at Silver Cross on Nov. 30, and she was able to go on a Hawaiian vacation with her boyfriend’s family a month later just after Christmas.

“I felt great and I was able to do everything I wanted to do in Hawaii,” Berner said. “And I didn’t’ have any stress about what would happen.”

Berner will continue to have tests to ensure not more cysts grow, but she said ultimately she’s happy she didn’t put it off.

“I didn’t want to keep dealing with it,” Berner said. “I’m glad I didn’t wait.”
