Silver Cross Hospital

The way you should be treated.™

More than 300 current and former patients visited the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Center at Silver Cross Hospital on June 23 to celebrate the center’s five-year anniversary. The Cancer Center opened June 19, 2012, and has helped treat more than 1,300 patients during the last five years.

One of those patients is Gloria Graham-Smith. The Frankfort resident is currently battling breast cancer and is being treated by Dr. Brooke Phillips, medical oncologist. Despite the health battles, Graham-Smith said she’s still feeling great. “I can’t say enough about this place,” she said while at the five-year celebration. “When I hear people going to other facilities, I tell them to come here. It’s so close to home, and the doctors become like family because you see them so often. So it’s nice to see them all here celebrating the anniversary.”

While at the anniversary celebration, Gloria met Barbara Procenti, who was treated for breast cancer by Dr. Sunil Narula, medical director of Medical Oncology, and Dr. Anne McCall, medical director for Radiation Oncology at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital.

“Dr. McCall actually recently released me and she gave me a big hug,” Barbara said. “The doctors just become like family. She’s like a mother to me now.”

“What an uplifting celebration! It was wonderful connecting with patients and friends,” Dr. McCall said. “It’s hard to believe that five years have gone by so quickly. Our cancer program continues to grow and serve our community!”

Since it opened, the Cancer Center has provided state-of-the-art chemotherapy and radiation treatments for residents of Will County and surrounding areas. Patients also have access to more than 150 clinical trials at the New Lenox facility in addition to hundreds more at University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. Recently, the Cancer Center at Silver Cross began offering genetic testing and counseling. Patients can be tested for genetic markers for breast, ovarian, colorectal and other cancers.

“It was a wonderful way for us as a cancer center to remind ourselves of why we do what we do; to make as many patients as possible cancer survivors,” said Dr. Shayan Rayani, medical oncologist.

“It was a great reconnecting with patients and their families,” Dr. Narula said. “You can really see all of the lives the cancer center has impacted over the last five years.”
