Silver Cross Hospital

The way you should be treated.™

The Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital is the first in Illinois and the tri-state area to use a navigation-guided robotic system to enhance the safety and accuracy of minimally invasive robotic spine surgery. The first procedures were performed at Silver Cross July 26 by orthopedic spine surgeon Chintan Sampat, M.D.

The hospital’s new Globus ExcelsiusGPSTM system combines sophisticated robotic technology with an advanced navigation system, similar to that in a car, to guide the surgeon during delicate spinal fusion procedures. (Spinal fusion joins two or more vertebrae into a single structure to prevent movement between the two bones to help prevent back pain.)

Dr. Sampat performed the first spinal fusion surgeries using the new robotic system July 26.

Before surgery, X-ray or computerized tomography (CT) images are taken and fed into the ExcelsiusGPSTM system to create a “map” of the patient’s anatomy. This map and real-time 3D images taken during surgery act as a guide to help the surgeon maneuver a robotic arm to the exact location for precisely placed implants.

“The surgeon is still in complete control, but this new robotic instrument offers the added benefit of 3D-guided navigation, which allows for precision and success during robotic spinal fusion surgery,” Dr. Sampat explained.

How it Works

Positioned next to the surgeon, the robot’s arm orients the surgeon and pinpoints the exact position to place needed spinal screws. The robot and surgeon then work together – the surgeon operating the instruments, and the robot guiding the direction, depth and angle of the surgeon’s hands.

Throughout the procedure, the surgical instruments and implants are continuously displayed on a high-resolution screen for the surgeon and staff to monitor, allowing the surgeon to view live feedback and ensure the most precise implant placement.

“The new system is also designed to streamline the entire procedure, reducing overall radiation exposure to the patient, surgeon and staff,” he added.

And because it’s minimally invasive, it allows the surgeon to make much smaller incisions along the spine, which means patients experience less post-surgical pain and scarring, less blood loss, fewer complications and a faster recovery so they can return to doing what they enjoy.

“This revolutionary technology represents the next step forward in Silver Cross Hospital’s world-class robotic surgery program and provides our patients and our clinical team with the most advanced minimally invasive treatment options available anywhere,” said Ruth Colby, Silver Cross President/CEO.

The Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital performs more surgeries using robotic-assisted technology than any other program in the Chicago area and is home to some of the most highly skilled surgeons in the United States. In fact, surgeons from around the world train at Silver Cross. In addition to spine surgery, Silver Cross offers robotic-assisted general surgical and specialized procedures such as hernia repair, colorectal surgery, prostatectomy and nephrectomy, uro-gynecological procedures, hysterectomy and single-site hysterectomy, hip and knee replacement and transoral incisionless robotic surgery for sleep apnea and throat cancer. The hospital’s fleet of surgical robots includes three da Vinci® surgical robots, including the latest da Vinci XI®, a Mako™ robotic-arm assisted surgery for knee and hip replacement, and the new Globus ExcelsiusGPSTM for spinal fusion.
