Silver Cross Offers Classes and Support Groups in October

Silver Cross Hospital offers a variety of health education classes and support groups during the month of October. For more information or to register, visit www.silvercross.org.  

Baby Basics Class

Parents-to-be and new parents can learn about their baby’s physical care and health, using child care, common problems, stress management and positive child guidance skills at a special one-day Baby Basics Class. This program will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  Cost is $25 per couple. Endoscopic Management of Reflux & Heartburn

Constant acid reflux and heartburn leads to a low quality of life, but relief is available. Learn about the risks and treatment options for heartburn, acid reflux or GERD, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer from Dr. Kamran Ayub, Medical Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver Cross. This free program will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Birthing Center Tours

Silver Cross Hospital will offer free Birthing Center Tours for expectant families at the hospital, 1900 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. The hour-long tours are offered Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and one Tuesday a month at 7:30 p.m. in the hospital’s luxurious birthing suites. Register at www.silvercross.org 

Prepared Childbirth Classes

Silver Cross Hospital will offer a two-part weekday Prepared Childbirth Class on Monday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. A two-park weekend class will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 and 12, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. All classes will be held in the hospital’s Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will receive instruction from a certified childbirth class instructor on breathing and relaxation. She will also review the labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum, and other birthing options. A tour of the Birthing Unit is included. Cost is $80 per couple. Register at www.silvercross.org 

Robotic Total Knee Replacement

In the past, knee surgery meant spending days in the hospital and painful recovery, but not today. Join orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Daley Thursday, Oct. 17, 5 p.m., for a discussion about the latest minimally invasive total knee replacement techniques including Mako™ robotic-arm-assisted surgery, which means a more precise fit of your knee implant, increased bone preservation, better stability and less pain. Register at www.silvercross.org.

Obesity & Your Health

Looking to lose weight? Join Drs. Christopher Joyce and Brian Lahmann, experienced gastric bypass surgeons with Bariatric & Minimally Invasive (BMI) Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, for a free informational session about Obesity & Your Health: Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You? Blood Pressure Screenings

Calcium Artery Scoring Screening  

Silver Cross Health Center—Homer Glen offers a quick and painless test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine your risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is ideal for men over age 45 and women over age 55 who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Postnatal Physical Therapy Screenings

The Shirley Ryan Ability at Silver Cross offers free postnatal physical therapy screenings for women six weeks to one-year post-delivery and who are experiencing pelvic or perineal pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse or separation of the abdominal muscles. Screenings take place at the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. During the 15-minute exam, a new mom’s birthing history and current problems will be reviewed. Women’s Pelvic Health Consultation

Bariatric Support Group

Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with BMI Surgery hosts a free Bariatric Support Group for individuals who have undergone weight loss surgery. The meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Baby Bereavement Support Group

Silver Cross Hospital offers a support group for parents who have experienced loss during pregnancy, at birth or shortly after, or from early Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Baby Bereavement Support Group will meet Thursday, Oct. 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., Pavilion A, New Lenox. Breastfeeding Support Group

The Silver Cross Birthing Center’s certified lactation consultants will host a free breastfeeding support group meeting on Friday, Oct. 4 and 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the hospital’s Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. New mothers have many questions and concerns about breastfeeding in the weeks leading up to and after birth. The Breastfeeding Support Group is a way to exchange information and experiences. Stroke Support Group

Stroke survivor’s family members and caregivers are welcome to attend the Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute’s Stroke Support Group. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and 23, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Breast Cancer Support Group

The American Cancer Society and Silver Cross Hospital will host I Can Cope, an educational program for women facing breast cancer, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. This free program covers topics relevant to the cancer experience and offers practical help in coping with some of the emotional issues resulting from a cancer diagnosis.  First time participants should visit www.silvercross.org to register to attend.
