Former Silver Cross Nurse Has the Will to Keep Giving Back

In her many years as a Silver Cross Hospital nurse, and even outside hospital walls, Deborah Jancaric felt strongly about giving to those who were hurting, grieving and otherwise less fortunate.

“I would go to prisons and read to the children of the female inmates who couldn’t read to them themselves,” said Deborah, who served at Silver Cross for 27 years in Orthopedics and three years in Endoscopy before retiring five years ago.

“As a nurse, I used to like to make people laugh. They might be hurting and need a smile. But I’m not there anymore to give them a laugh. But I can give them something else.”

Deborah decided to leave a portion of her estate to Silver Cross. She talked with Tracy Simons, Silver Cross Foundation Executive Director, at a Retirees Lunch. She mentioned her intentions, and met soon after to finalize her plans, welcoming her into the Legacy Society.

As a member of the Silver Cross Legacy Society, benefits include:

  • Commemorative naming opportunities and recognition at select levels for disclosed gifts
  • “At Your Service” personal health navigator to assist with scheduling hospital, testing and doctor appointments, referrals and billing
  • Private lunch with Silver Cross Hospital’s President/CEO
  • Lifetime membership as a Silver Cross Community Trustee
  • Invitations to exclusive gatherings throughout the year
  • Legacy Society Pin and Certificate to include with your Estate files.
  • The certainty of knowing that your gift will ensure safe, quality healthcare for years to come

Deborah got the idea after looking at her Dad’s will when he passed away.

“I thought, ‘There has to be another way to take this to another level, to help people who need it most.”

There are several ways to make a bequest to YOUR Hospital through the Silver Cross Foundation by giving:

Other ways include:

  • Make Silver Cross Foundation a beneficiary of your will or living trust, life insurance policy, retirement plan, and/or donor-advised fund
  • Establish a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust and create a steady stream of income for yourself and/or others

Even a small amount can have a big impact over time.  Deborah has set aside bequests for charities and her family. She had not visited some of the charities, but she knows her bequest will be used well at Silver Cross.

“I worked as a nurse. I saw all those people coming and going. I saw the staff at Silver Cross working hard to help them. And I saw Silver Cross taking care of their patients and employees.

“Silver Cross made me a good nurse. Even though I’m retired, I wanted to keep helping, too.”

If you have already arranged for a bequest or other planned gift, please contact the Silver Cross Foundation and complete the Legacy Society Gift Agreement so we can honor your support.

If you are still considering such a gift, let us know so we can help you and your advisors complete your gift in a way that benefits your estate and makes clear your intention to help Silver Cross Hospital.
