Winter Stomach Bug Alert: Norovirus on the Loose!

Paul Striegel, MD

Colds and flu aren’t the only seasonal illnesses making the rounds right now. A strong stomach bug known as norovirus, and more recently dubbed the “winter vomiting disease,” is spreading across the United States—and it’s right here in Will County too.

In fact, Silver Cross Hospital’s Emergency Department has seen dozens of cases over the past week alone.

“Norovirus is a very contagious stomach virus,” explains Dr. Gregory Striegel, family medicine doctor with Silver Cross Medical Group in Orland Park. “It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, mild fever and body aches. It spreads quickly, especially in the cold months when people are indoors together.”

Why it’s Spreading Now

Experts report norovirus has been growing since mid‑October. It spreads easily in schools, buses and homes—anywhere people gather. And with the holidays upon us, unfortunately, it’s the gift that keeps giving.

To stay healthy and prevent the spread of norovirus, Dr. Striegel recommends:

  • Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer alone doesn’t work as well.
  • Cleaning surfaces with a bleach solution—especially after someone in your household gets sick.
  • Not sharing food or utensils, and cooking shellfish really well.
Tips for Parents

If you’re the parent of young children, teach them to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before eating. Be sure to pack hand wipes for school and activities, and remind them not to share drinks or snacks with friends.

Despite your best preventive efforts, if your child gets sick, keep them home for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.

What to Do if You or a Family Member Gets Sick
  • Stay home from school, work and public places.
  • Drink lots of liquids like water and soup to avoid dehydration.
  • Start with simple foods like crackers or toast once you can keep liquids down.
  • Wait 48 hours after symptoms stop before being around others or handling food.

“Norovirus spreads fast, even before you know you’re sick,” Dr. Striegel adds. “The best defense against any virus is good handwashing, keeping surfaces clean and staying home when you’re sick. Acting early helps protect everyone.”
