Giving in 2026: New Tax Benefits Make Supporting Silver Cross Easier Than Ever

For many donors, charitable giving is first and foremost about supporting causes that matter. But in 2026, updated federal tax rules also make it easier for more people to receive a tax benefit for their generosity—even if they don’t itemize deductions. These changes create new opportunities for donors to support the Silver Cross Foundation while maximizing the impact of their gifts.

A New Opportunity for Donors Who Take the Standard Deduction

Beginning in tax year 2026, individuals who take the standard deduction—rather than itemizing—may now claim an above‑the‑line charitable deduction for qualifying cash gifts to public charities like the Silver Cross Foundation:

  • Up to $1,000 for individuals
  • Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly

This deduction is available even if you don’t itemize, meaning more households can benefit from charitable giving on their tax return than in recent years. Cash gifts made by check, credit card, or online qualify, as long as they are made to an eligible nonprofit and completed by December 31, 2026

Why This Matters Now

Since the standard deduction increased several years ago, many generous donors stopped receiving a tax benefit for charitable gifts—even though their commitment never wavered. This 2026 change was designed to broaden participation in philanthropy and encourage continued support of nonprofits that provide essential services close to home.

For donors who care deeply about healthcare, this presents a meaningful opportunity to support Silver Cross Hospital, an independent, not‑for‑profit regional healthcare provider, while also enjoying a modest but important tax benefit.

Additional Tax‑Smart Ways to Give in 2026

In addition to the new above‑the‑line deduction for non‑itemizers, 2026 remains a strong year for other tax‑efficient giving strategies, depending on your financial situation:

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
Donors age 70½ or older may give directly from an IRA—up to $111,000 per person in 2026—with the distribution excluded from taxable income. QCDs do not require itemizing and can satisfy required minimum distributions, making them one of the most tax‑efficient ways to give this year.
  • Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Donating long‑held stock directly to the Foundation can allow itemizing donors to avoid capital gains tax and potentially deduct the full fair‑market value, extending the impact of both the gift and the tax benefit.

(As always, donors are encouraged to consult a tax or financial advisor to determine the best approach for their individual circumstances.)

Why Give to the Silver Cross Foundation?

A gift to the Silver Cross Foundation is a direct investment in healthcare close to home. Philanthropic support helps advance patient care, fund lifesaving technology, expand clinical programs, and ensure that Silver Cross Hospital remains ready to meet the evolving needs of our community.

In 2026, donor support is especially critical as Silver Cross advances strategic initiatives such as the OR of the Future, enhanced diagnostic capabilities, and patient‑centered programs that strengthen care for generations to come.

Make Your Impact by Year‑End

Whether you give $100, $1,000, or more, your generosity helps ensure exceptional, compassionate care remains available in our community. With new charitable tax incentives now in place for non‑itemizers, 2026 is an ideal year to give—for your heart and your financial plan.
