Why Get a Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, and it ranks second in cancer-related deaths. While age is a leading risk factor, colorectal cancer is appearing in younger people with alarming frequency, most likely due to lifestyle factors including highly processed foods. That's why colonoscopy is now recommended for people ages 45 years and up.
While other colorectal screening tests are available, colonoscopy is considered the gold standard because it can screen, detect and remove precancerous polyps - and cancer.
Improving Polyp Detection using AI
At Silver Cross, the use of highly advanced artificial intelligence during colonoscopy offers another "set of eyes" for the physician, allowing them to detect even the smallest irregularities during the procedure.
The technology analyzes real-time images during colonoscopy, highlighting potential polyps. It doesn't replace the gastroenterologist's expertise. Instead, it enhances detection of polyps that might be missed by the human eye, which improves adenoma detection rates. And the higher the adenoma detection rate, the lower the chance of developing colorectal cancer.
Three Convenient Locations for Colonoscopy
For your convenience, Silver Cross offers 3 locations for colonoscopy: the main hospital, the outpatient Silver Cross Procedure Center on the east side of our campus and Premier Suburban Medical Group's Orland Park Pavilion.
