Although she told her Mom she was going to be a doctor when she was 5, Dr. Irizarry took a circuitous route before attending University of Illinois-Chicago Medical School, with an internship at Loyola School of Medicine.
She considered physical therapy, nutrition. Studying for a master’s degree in the latter at New York University, she worked on treatment plans for individual patients with a group consisting Social Worker, Psychiatrist, Rehab Medicine, Pediatrician and Internist.
I experienced these doctors as regular people like myself who studied hard. Thus, I was inspired to study medicine! At UIC, I fell in love with Pediatrics! I loved working with children and their parents. Still do.
Her clinical areas of interest are asthma, allergies, dermatology, development, infectious disease, mental and emotional health, and general pediatrics.
She is fluent in Spanish, speaking only that language growing up in New York to a Puerto Rican family. She values her strong family ties, something she brings when working with children and their parents.
I have always gravitated toward working with children. It’s funny how they get my goofy humor. We tend to connect that way. I see myself as their ally, defender, and cheerleader. I’m there for them 100%. I feel the same about their parents. I feel very affectionate toward both my patients and their parents. I treat and love them like family.
A recipient of many awards, Dr. Irizarry also enjoys cooking, eating, reading, dancing, swimming, sky-diving and traveling.
