Hot and Hazardous: Summer Safety with SCMG

Summer Heat ImageAs outdoor temperatures soar to dangerous highs, it's important to take necessary precautions to stay safe in extreme heat. Heatwaves can be dangerous and even life-threatening, but with the right measures, you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

First and foremost, it's crucial to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Remember to avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption, as they can dehydrate your body, doing more harm than you may realize. TASTY TIP: Eating chilled fruits and vegetables with high water content is a great way to stay hydrated!

Another essential tip is to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside, seek shade and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your skin. And applying a sunscreen with a high SPF will protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

It's also important to keep your living space cool. Use air conditioning if available or, if not, keep your windows covered during the day to prevent heat from entering. NOTE: Electric fans may provide some relief but be cautious as they only circulate air and will not cool the room. You may need to seek shelter in a community cooling shelter if you are unable to cool down at home.

It’s always good to check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Make sure they have access to a cool environment and are adequately hydrated.

Lastly, be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. You’ll feel dizzy, nauseous, have a headache, feel a rapid heartbeat, and may even lose consciousness. If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, please seek medical assistance immediately.

By following these simple yet crucial safety measures, you can enjoy the summer while staying safe and protected from extreme heat.
